How to get more watch time on YouTube
Watch time is the metric YouTube weights more than almost anything else. A video that 10,000 people watch for 8 minutes earns more algorithmic push than a video that 50,000 people click and abandon after 30 seconds.
The factors that kill watch time are almost always in the first two minutes. Slow intros that start with "hi guys welcome back to my channel" lose viewers before the content even starts. Saying what the video is about before doing it. Long sponsor reads placed before the hook lands.
Three things reliably improve watch time. Open directly inside the topic, no greeting, no preamble. Tell viewers at the 90-second mark that something specific is coming later in the video and it is worth staying for. Structure your video so each section ends on a slight cliffhanger that resolves in the next one.
End screens and chapters also help because they give viewers something to click to next. A viewer who finishes your video and immediately watches another one of yours is worth significantly more to your channel's algorithm than a viewer who watches one and leaves.
